Exercise Your Right To Be Resilent

If only life were calm seas all the time. A perpetual vacation would be paradise. Unfortunately we live in a fallen world and are beset with financial loss, divorce, death, loss of jobs, a devastating medical diagnosis, betrayal and when that happens we tend to focus on what is happening around us not who lives inside. Life can knock us around in a grand fashion.Paul was not speaking out of turn when He asked the question “Do you not realize about yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you?

2 Corinthians 13:5

So when any number of devastating circumstances fall at your door. Remember that Jesus isn’t only walking beside us, He is living in us. If He is living inside us, we can know that no matter what happens. He is going to be there with us.

The Biblical References to our resilience are abundant.

Joshua 1:9

2 Timothy 1:7

Romans 8:37

Ephesians 6:10

A particular favorite of mine. 1 Peter 1:8-9

Stop dwelling on the bad. Yes, it hurts, it changes your life, it feels as if nothing will ever be the same but remember where your strength comes from. Stop looking out, start looking up.

Exercise your faith even when you don’t feel like it.

The hope, faith and trust that you experience when you rely on Jesus Christ will temper the hurt and pain if only by the fact that we know we are preceded by Him who we have put our faith and trust in.

Christ will keep His promise to always be with us.

The definition of resilience is “the ability to persist in life’s pursuits in spite of difficulties and obstacles. Isn’t it comforting to know that our resilience is grounded in our faith in Christ and nothing can shake that.

Be strong in your trials with the truth you know of Christ.

As you wade through the pain trust in the truth you know of Christ.

“We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9 NLT)

A Time For Everything

A Time for EverythingECC.3:1 There is a time for everything,

and a season for every activity under the heavens:
The secret to knowing the peace that God offers is to discover, accept and appreciate that God is the only one with perfect timing.

Being a child of God is amazing because it means that no matter what season of life we find ourselves in, we can choose to celebrate and honor God in the midst of it.

We can make a choice to grow in the fullness of God and recognize the wondrous season God has plopped you in. As you are appreciating the season, no matter what it is, you are becoming more like your Creator.

We all have our favorite seasons.

Some like the new beginnings that spring offers.

Summer is a favorite of others because of the opportunity to enjoy long sunny days.

Fall can bring people happiness because of cooler temperatures, colorful leaves and bountiful crops.

Still others love winter for blazing fires, warm clothes and snuggle blankets.

EVERY SEASON IS HANDCRAFTED BY GOD FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, the season you are experiencing is no different.

Some seasons are more fun and comfortable than others. Some we enjoy, some not so much. But each season provides an opportunity to learn something more about ourselves and our God.

If we weather the storm, we sometimes get to see our God reveal himself as miraculous and wonderful right before our eyes. .

We don’t always get to choose the seasons we experience in life, but we can choose to know that God is there with us.

There are times we simply don’t understand the season we are in. However, knowing God trumps knowing answers.

No matter the season bestowed upon you. Take a moment to thank God and ask Him to reveal Himself to you.

The Love of a Child

She looked up at me with complete trust, this brand new little granddaughter I held in my arms. I knew then and there that it would be a life long love affair.

When she gazes up at me I can see complete faith in her that I will take care of her every need. She does not stress over it, she just knows.

This little girl soaks in the unconditional love that comes to her.

She takes it without reservation and she closes her eyes and simply rests there.

She cannot yet understand what I say and she cannot yet see me clearly, but she knows nonetheless.

This is the kind of love that we often think we cannot possibly receive as adults. It is reserved for others.

Yet when we turn to Christ, He offers us that. As much as I love this little grand-daughter, the love I can give her does not hold a candle to the love Christ Jesus offers me. He takes me just as I am and He loves me. He offers me unconditional love that I can get no where else.

If only I had the same kind of faith of this child I hold in my arms. The kind of faith that says, I know you will take care of my every need Father, I will let you.

If only I had the same kind of faith that says I accept without reservation the unconditional love you offer me Father. I will receive it and rest in it fully.

The funny thing is, my Father knows my shortcomings and my fears and He loves me anyway.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

An informational Revelation

Spring housecleaning is a chore. Especially when you get to the spare bedroom where all the how to books, self help and DIY manuals, magazines, extra Bibles and CD’s live. Oh my what a wealth of information we have at our fingertips. It is everywhere, in any form imaginable.

Yet we still live in houses that need repair, we are still overweight, our cars still break down and we financially live from paycheck to paycheck and we try to fill the space God wants to inhabit with a million other things.

Information might be plentiful but its pretty useless without revelation.

I heard that phrase the other day, information without revelation is meaningless. I love that phrase, it is true. Read all the information you want but unless God reveals something to you about that information that you did not understand before, it is information that you never put to use.

Knowledge from the information you read isn’t understanding just because you read it, it is understanding when you obey it. This is where it gets a little uncomfortable. Lots of people read the Bible, to lots of people it is just information that sits on a shelf.

I love how Ephesians 1:17 slips so perfectly in here. “ I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know Him better.”

A revelation is when God’s word becomes your reality, it is a willingness to trust and to obey. Only God’s word mixed with faith will get you to revelation. That is the point where all the information you ingest will become meaningful and not just words printed on a page.

Father, I pray that you will give me the Spirit of wisdom and revelation to know you better.

Defeated Christians? Is that really our problem?

Christian life is so difficult to live. The question of the day revolves around “How do we live the Christian life when most days we feel frustrated and defeated? Cynicism, disappointment and hopelessness are very present companions.

Paul, in Romans 7:15 says it well. For that which I am doing, I do not understand for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.

Well if that doesn’t sum up life in a nutshell I don’t know what does. It seems we have a problem that is keeping us from experiencing the serenity and freedom that we read about so often in the Bible.

We state our problems as any one of a number of things. My spouse, my family, my job, my friends, an addiction, you get the picture and you can fill in with your own list of problems that are robbing you of your life.

I think however, that we are deceiving ourselves if we settle on blaming external factors for our dissatisfaction with life.

I love this quote.

“Your problem is that you don’t know what your problem is. You think your problem is your problem, but that’s not the problem at all. Your problem is not your problem and THAT’S YOUR MAIN PROBLEM.”

Say what??

The real problem is that we must come to the understanding that the Christian life is not difficult to live, it is downright impossible. There is only one way to live the Christian life and that is to trust Jesus to be your life and live His life through you.

We cannot get our needs met apart from Jesus. I know it may seem that we do………..for awhile. But Jesus is our Provider of life,

 IN EVERYTHING.

Even God’s name Jehovah Jireh means “the Lord our provider, or the Lord will provide. He is our source for whatever it is that we need.

Can you trust your life and your problems to someone who is all knowing, who is everywhere all at once and who is all powerful? Can you say the same of anyone you are trusting now?

You can trust God with your problem, he is your shelter, refuge and hiding place. He is the one who comforts and heals. He is our source of wisdom. There is not one single thing you need that God cannot provide. He can do it all!

More than that, He wants to do it all. He has a plan for you.

Meditate on this verse today.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4: 19

Prayer of Restoration

This is a hard conversation to have. Bad things do happen to good people. When things happen that scar the soul and deplete hope, we turn to coping mechanisms just to get through the day. Those actions may be misunderstood and cruelly criticized. I guess what I am trying to say is we don’t know what anyone else has or is walking through. We don’t know from where a person is coming. Remember that there is usually a rational reason somewhere in the picture for that irrational action. These kinds of things can cause insecurities, a feeling of unworthiness, self-doubt and self-hatred. Be kind at all times because a person may be struggling with something that you know nothing about and the behaviors you see being displayed are the only way that person has to get through life.
For those who struggle silently, I offer the following.

Prayer of Restoration

Lord God, I tried to play the game of life by the rules life demands, but I was soundly defeated. I am tired, I have come to the conclusion that I cannot win. Lord I want to be delivered from the stress and strife of playing the game by others rules and not those you set forth. I want to be free. Help me to be free.
While trying to make it from point A to point B in life, you come to think that you are alone and if you want something done, it has to be you that does it. When you try to get through life in a manner that you believe is necessary to you at that moment, it seems to upset someone because you didn’t do it their way or it was taken differently than you intended. Father help me quench the desire for any game playing and manipulation without resigning myself to a life of misuse. Help me to allow you Father, to do for me what I cannot do for myself. Help me to look to you for my answers and not to man.

You formed my inward parts and knitted me together in my mothers womb. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. You saw me before I was formed, my days were written in your book. Your breathe gave me life. I am your workmanship, created in your image. Help me to hold fast to who you created me to be and to realize that you have given me a spirit of power, love and self-discipline. Help me to realize that I no longer have to surrender to fears and insecurities, instead I can give them to you. Help me to quit using other people as mirrors and let me see myself as you see me. Engrave upon my heart that you knew what you were doing when you formed me and you are still working for me and in me. Write upon my heart the fact that you love me for who I am not in spite of who I am.

Remind me Lord that the timing of all things belongs solely to you. Help me to remember that the worlds ideal time table for the healing of emotional scars is not the timetable you are giving me. You will help me heal the scars burned deep in my soul in your time and your way. It may not make sense to one single person on this earth, but keep reminding me that for me, the timing and method is perfect. Deliver me from caring that others do not understand where you are leading me and help me to ignore the scalding criticism of others and listen solely to what you are telling me to do. Give me the courage to stay the course with you. You are the only one with the map to the destination where we are heading.

Deliver me Father from thinking that I am the only one who can solve my problems. Help me to come to you with the things that are dragging me down. Remind me that there is nothing I can ask from you that you cannot give me. Deliver me from making an idol of myself and remind me to keep my eyes on you and look to you before I look to the world.
You long for me to live free from any ambitions that prove unhealthy. Supply me the courage Father to live a life filled with worthy ambitions, the ones that draw me closer to you. Help me to eliminate my need to hide from you and give me the courage to come before you with total transparency. Give me the kind of courage that propels me to you just as I am. Help me to forgive those who don’t understand my world. Remind me that you love me even though you know every single stupid and ridiculous thing I have said or done. You don’t look at my failures, you look at my needy heart. Help me to remember that the world does not.

Father not only do I ask you to reveal yourself to me clearly and consistently, but I ask you to reveal to me all the parts that make me, uniquely and totally me. Give to me eyes to see the areas I need to work on and where I have created my own insecurities and troubles. Turn me from any pursuit of self worship and control. Let me see the world as an opportunity to show others who you are and not as an arena of competition. Forgive me Father when I fail to appreciate the person who you have made me to be.

Free me from the chains of self protection that I have clung to but have only proved to keep me tightly bound.. Show me when the insecurity and fear I am feeling are of my own making. Show me Father the rational beginnings to my irrational fears so that together we can conquer them.

Help me to avoid believing in any man more than I believe in you. If I have been hurt, let down , failed in any way, help me to see them who have injured me as you see them, as broken and needy people who need you as much as I do.
Help me to realize Lord that Satan will keep me in bondage by convincing me that I will never be ok I am not and can never be worthy and that there is no hope. Help me to see Satan’s true colors. Make a miracle of me. Show Satan to be the liar he is.

Deliver me oh God, make a miracle of me. When I feel the panic rising in my soul, empower me to trust you. Help me to see that just because my circumstances have changed and I feel the sand shifting beneath my feet, I have not lost you, you do not change, you are forever there for me.
Restore to me Lord, all that my insecurities have stolen from me. Cover me with Your strength and allow me to show the world I am firmly grounded in and clothed with your dignity. Help me to quit surrendering my strength, dignity, passion and worthiness. Let me live solely for you and follow your path in my healing. .

Road Maps, are you choosing the right one?

I wrote yesterday about the fact that in the life of a Christian, there will be trials. It is something to consider but don’t stop there. Don’t let that fact (scary as it may be) turn into a reason not to pursue the life Christ wants for you. In the Bible there are some pretty blunt scripture telling us that we can expect hardships, however, there are some scripture just as bold that tell us who will get us through those hardships.

Consider Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not rely on your own understanding.

If we would simply take these words at their face value we would save ourselves a whole bunch of heartache. In any given situation, there is usually your way (based on feelings, and more than a few emotions), and God’s way. The scripture goes on to tell us to think about God in ALL OUR WAYS, and He will guide us on the right path.
Left to our own devices we almost always travel a road that leads here and there, back and forth, round and round. Only when we have exhausted every single resource we possess do we start to listen to what God is telling us and let Him guide us back to the only path that will gain us eternity, His path.

In Isaiah 45, verse 2 to be exact, it says God will go before us and level out the uneven places. WHAT? We don’t have to be our own construction crew? We don’t have to continue packing the wrecking ball around? No, choose to take God at His word. Learn to trust, put your feelings and emotions aside, consider Him first and enjoy the journey on an even and level path, right to glory.

Did you know that no matter what is going on in your world, God is there holding your right hand. He is whispering (or shouting) Do Not Fear, I will help you. If you don’t believe me, check our Isaiah 41:3, it is there in black and while.

With the present state of affairs in our world and local communities, we need to hold to these messages more than ever. God was, is and always will be our constant traveling companion. Put away the GPS, the Rand McNally Atlas and log out of Trip Advisor. There is only one way we are getting to our eternal destination and that is to follow the only true travel guide available to us. Open your Bible and let God chart your course.
