Drowning in simplicity

“The unfolding of your words gives light, it gives understanding to the simple.” Psalm 119:130“The unfolding of your word gives light….”

God desires to give us light and to have us live in His light. He wants to illuminate to us, who He really is and where He wants to send us.

Meditate on the light of God. Psalms also tells us that “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

It might be just enough light to illuminate one single step but rest assured, if you take one step in God’s light, He will provide the light for the next step, and the next and the next.

….”it gives understanding to the simple.”

This ending to the sentence gives such great hope. Opening the Bible is a daunting thing. This is a vast text of 66 books, with 1,189 chapters in those books, all perfectly inspired and guided entirely by God through approximately 40 men of diverse backgrounds over approximately 1500 years.

You don’t know where to start reading the Bible and some of the text is so deep it is confusing. It didn’t take long for me to decide that I was one of the “simple” that God was talking about.

The wonderful thing about God is, although we may be uneducated on things of the Bible, if we are willing to learn, He is willing to teach.

Psalm 119:105 says “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Don’t worry, God has the perfect plan to illuminate us and make us wise. He gives us the capacity to learn His word, the tools to learn His words and the drive to not just gather information but to gather the information with revelation and live that knowledge we have gathered.

One simple step on our part, opening the Bible, that is all it takes, God does the rest!

CMA is in the midst of our annual Labor Day Campout. Breakfast this morning was provided by fellow campers. The hospitality was amazing and the biscuits and gravy were wonderful and nourished our bodies. However, it was the conversation that nourished my soul. A comment was made that started me thinking about truth and how society perceives it.
“Truth is still truth even if no one believes it, a lie is still a lie, even if everyone believes it.”
If asked what the truth is in our world today, you would likely get many different answers. The concept of truth is highly distorted in the world we live in. Something I read recently best describes to me the state of truth in our society. “To some, truth is subjective, the truth is highly dependent on unique and personal preferences and opinions. Others believe truth is a collective judgement, a cultural consensus and some even deny the concept of truth altogether.”

Is it any wonder we are a world in chaos and decline? It seems the idea of absolute truth (defined as something that is true at all times, in all places and has relevance for our lives) does not exist. Confusion and chaos are the results of living by the world’s standard of truth.
Ours is a society that treats truth like a made up story or more to the point, a story we make up ourselves. We hear from others, “ believe what makes sense to you, live for what brings you pleasure and for gosh sakes, don’t have a fit when someone else’s “truth” doesn’t fit your version of “truth”. Make moral and ethical decisions on what seems best to you and hope for the best. We are unique and incredible individuals and God created us to be that way. So because God puts us first, we need to put ourselves first also….. correct?
Somehow we have forgotten that we are to make decisions based on what God thinks, not on Mother Earth or our inner desires, not on our thoughts, feelings, popular opinion, personal reasonings, scientific suppositions or anything associated with the physical world in which we live. We are not so quick to ask What would Jesus do any longer. As long as we are tolerant of others and live by the golden rule, we are good, right?
So I kept digging and came up with a definition written from what the Bible teaches. “Truth is that which is consistent with the mind, will, character, glory and being of God. In short, truth is the self expression of God.”
There is good, and bad, dark and light in the world, but there is only one truth. Truth cannot have any true meaning apart from God, God embodies the very definition of truth.
Truth is not a principle, truth is a person. Truth is Jesus Christ.

John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life…………..No one comes to the Father except through me.

Come home to the one and only truth you need, the one and only absolute truth there is. It is an issue of eternal significance. Truth will bring you life.

Don’t listen to worldly wisdom, trust in the one who lights your path.

“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.” Abraham Maslow

I think this statement perfectly states how I am feeling right now. It took awhile to arrive here but I think that finally I am glimpsing at least a little of what God is trying to show me.

A quote was posted on my wall not too long ago and I “liked” it without too much thought because it seemed to fit with what was running around my head at the moment. The quote was “The worst feeling in the world is knowing you did the best you could and it still wasn’t good enough.” Right on I thought to myself as I hit that like button while my bowl of self-pity was getting fuller and fuller.

It’s been a tough year in our neck of the woods but where hasn’t it been a tough year, right?

Every time I turned around I felt as if the wind had been knocked out of me and a distinct and overwhelming sense of discouragement became a constant companion. It seemed if it could go wrong in the past eight months or so………..it did go wrong. It is easy to get sucked into thinking that someone is out to get you and you are facing Goliath all alone. It is easy to forget that a sense of failure is probably one of Satan’s favorite ways to influence your thoughts. He is whispering in your ear, if your best isn’t good enough you are not good enough.

Satan wages a pretty effective battle. But it is all lies.

Then subtly and quietly God has started planting a thought in my heart. Yes my child, there will be days your best is not good enough, but it was all you had to give and you gave it willingly.

If God is lighting your path and you are still stumbling along……………..God is still lighting your path. If your best efforts are met with defeat after defeat stand strong and be proud that God cares enough to hold you up as you stand through the fury that falls heavily when we stand for what is right.

The closer you draw to God the more Satan is going to draw a clear and definitive line in the sand. Step forward into growth and watch as God takes your hand and helps you walk right over that line in the sand. He can and He will be your mighty warrior.

Keep asking God to guide your steps and He will steer you right into victory. The only one your best has to be good enough for is God.

Don’t let the darkness overtake you

I have heard the quote that it only takes one small candle to light a dark room, then I take into consideration another quote I am familiar with, that thousands of candles can be lighted from that one candle. The fact is that the moment a candle enters the darkness, the darkness becomes light.

However, what we must remember is there is always a reason for the darkness we walk through before we reach the light or before we can be part of spreading the light.

If we are living in darkness it is very easy to feel as if the darkness has won and all illumination has been eliminated for ever,. If you are looking in the right places for the light,  and if you are looking for God to brighten up your world, the light is never extinguished. The light may be momentarily hidden by things of the world, or we are blinded by our lack of vision, but the light is there .

Don’t let living in darkness become a self imposed prison, we do have a choice, we can sit in the cellar and hang out with the home canned vegetables where it is cold, musty and dark, or we can take a chance, call on God and come into the light.

Now I realize that it is a struggle to see the light some days, it is hard to see the goodness. However, as it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:5, we are all children of the light and children of the day. We were never meant to dwell in darkness.

I do believe we can hold onto the promise God made us, He alone holds the power, I mean really……………….all God had to say was “let there be light” and guess what, there was light.

Consider Psalm 139:10-

If I fear that the darkness will cover me

and the light around me turn to night

(I will remember that) darkness is not dark to you

The night is as bright as day

Your right hand will hold me fast.

It would seem that the darkest night is no match for God. It takes us making a choice to attain the light but once we accept Jesus Christ as our savior, the light will never be extinguished and we can get on with lighting those thousands of other candles searching for a spark to bring their candle to life.
